As the World Settles into Dusk, 2026, oil on linen, 24 x 36 in.
Originally from Arizona, Josh Gibson finds his interests and influences both near and far, from the classical to the offbeat. He graduated from California College of the Arts with distinction. The desert Southwest is the central theme of his work; he says, “With a perception forged by the surreal qualities of the Sonoran Desert, I find myself preoccupied with the Southwestern landscape. The desert is a powerful and strange location. A place of stark contrast. The rocky buttes and lack of water create a foreboding atmosphere. However, the wide-open skies counter this, light shifting, clouds swirling, creating an unparalleled state of meditation.” He aims to capture the power and nuance of the desert, capturing subtle qualities of atmosphere and mood that “a photograph or “straight-forward rendering cannot.”
