Arla Lucia

Cosmic Carry-on For Arla, 2026, beaded flat bag with cascading fringe, 20 x 12 x 4 in.

Arla Lucia is an enrolled member of the Seneca-Cayuga Nation of Oklahoma. She was reared in southern Colorado without a direct connection to her tribal stories, material culture, or community. Because of this, Lucia decided to pursue Haudenosaunee raised bead embroidery as a vehicle to make her way home to her traditions. In the absence of anyone to teach her, Lucia taught herself, meticulously dissecting historical grandmother pieces, photo archives, and even contemporary artists to reverse engineer the art and techniques. Following the path that each line of beads laid out and where it took her, they came to life before her eyes. Recognized as an emerging talent, Lucia was featured in Cowboys & Indians magazine as an upcoming artist to watch in their spring 2025 issue. She has been an accepted artist at prestigious fine art markets such as the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market, the Autry Museum of the American West: American Indian Arts Festival, and Santa Fe Indian Market. She is a multiple award winner in her medium and is dedicated to sharing her craft with a broader audience, ensuring that Indigenous art remains vibrant and appreciated in today’s world.
