Sheldon Harvey
Snake Bird – Anhinga, 2026, oil on board, 24 x 30 x 1.5 in.
Sheldon Harvey is from the small community of Lukachukai near the center of the Navajo reservation in northeast Arizona. A member of the Red Running Into Water clan of the Diné, he was trained as a medicine man by his grandfather and great-grandfather but knew from an early age that he wanted to be an artist. Harvey was taught to paint by his uncle, Aaron Harvey. He attended Diné College and worked with Don Whitesinger and Tony Abeyta. Harvey explains that the guidance of his silversmith grandfather, Leo Harvey, and Videl Nez at Diné College became a significant influence and inspiration in his work. Harvey’s sculptures are made of wood, hand-stained and painted, with feathers, yucca, and other found natural materials.
