Originally from Laguna Pueblo, Marla Allison is a California-based visual artist creating work based on tradition, cultural displacement, and the human experience. Her work draws from traditional Laguna and Hopi Puebloan pottery designs, as well as cubism and futurism. Talking about her practice, Allison says, “I was a very quiet child; my paintings are my voice.” Allison studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe and has participated in artist residencies and cultural exchanges globally, making work in Chiapas, Mexico; Bristol, UK; Manama, Bahrain; and more. Allison believes that global collaboration is important to “strengthen each other and build greater bridges . . . no matter where you come from or how you start.”
